By Mike Moussa, PE — You have a product idea. Maybe it’s a kitchen gadget, a pet accessory, a tool, or a consumer electronics device. Here’s the realistic path from idea to manufactured product — and where we fit in.
The Real Product Development Path
Phase 1: Concept (1-2 weeks)
You describe what you want. We create a 3D CAD model — either from your sketches, descriptions, or existing products you want to improve. You get renders and dimensions to review. Cost: typically $500-2,000 depending on complexity.
Phase 2: Prototype (1-3 weeks)
We 3D print or machine a physical prototype. You hold it, test it, show it to people, and figure out what needs to change. Most products go through 2-4 prototype rounds. Each round costs $100-500 and takes a few days. This is where the design gets refined.
Phase 3: User Testing (2-4 weeks)
You test with real users. Friends, family, potential customers. We build 5-20 units via 3D printing or urethane casting for broader testing. Get real feedback before committing to production tooling.
Phase 4: Production Preparation
We design the product for the intended manufacturing process — injection molding, CNC machining, die casting, or whatever makes sense for your volume and budget. Draft angles, wall thicknesses, material selection, tolerance analysis. This is where engineering matters most.
Phase 5: Manufacturing
For small runs (10-500 units), we manufacture in-house via 3D printing, urethane casting, or CNC. For larger volumes, we help you select and manage a contract manufacturer — domestic or overseas.
What Makes Us Different
Most “product development” firms charge $10,000-50,000 before you have anything to show for it. We work in small, affordable phases. You approve each phase before moving to the next. If the idea doesn’t work at Phase 2, you’re out $1,000 — not $30,000.
We’re also honest. If your product already exists, we’ll tell you. If the manufacturing economics don’t work at your price point, we’ll tell you. If your timeline is unrealistic, we’ll tell you. We’d rather lose a project than waste your money.
Crowdfunding Support
Planning a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign? You need:
- Professional prototype photos and video — we build camera-ready prototypes
- Realistic cost estimates — we calculate actual manufacturing costs so you price rewards correctly
- Fulfillment plan — we help you figure out how to actually make and ship 500-5,000 units
- A working prototype — backers fund products that look real, not renderings
Get Started
Tell us about your idea. First conversation is free — we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s buildable, what it’ll cost, and how long it’ll take.
